Guilt-Free Ground Turkey Gyros

"I love Greek gyros sandwiches, but I don't like to eat lamb and it's not the healthiest food in the world. This recipe satisfies my craving. You can eat these on pita bread, but it's just as good on any other bread in place of deli meat. Serve it with tzatziki sauce, Greek yogurt, or sour cream."

directions

 • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
 • Put all of the ingredients in a bowl, and spend a few minutes kneading the resulting mixture with your hands so everything is combined well.
 • Pour the mixture onto a lightly oiled 9x13 pan. Smash it down with your hands a bit until it looks like a very large hamburger patty.
 • Bake it for 35 minutes.
 • Remove, then cut the meat into thin slices and serve. If you want a crispier, more authentic gyros texture, lay the sliced meat down on the pan and place in the broiler for 5 more minutes.

Questions & Replies

 1. What would be the ideal leanness is? Thinking 85% might come out oily, but maybe the oats absorb some of that?

 2. In the ingredients is OATMEAL the DRY “OATS” or prepared OATMEAL?

 3. Just wondering what kind of oatmeal or oats to use in this recipe? Quick cooking or old fashioned?

Reviews

 1. Excellent! The seasonings are spot-on. The addition of oatmeal (though I initially felt hesitant about adding it in) was genius. It created the perfect gyro meat texture. Who needs lamb?!

I did use a pinch of cinnamon, as I had no allspice on-hand.

I will be making this again & again. Thanks for sharing!

 2. I made a food.com account just to review this recipe. It was incredible- I thought about leaving out the oatmeal but it gave it fantastic texture. Amazing flavor, easy to make, I'll definitely be making again very soon. Next time I will reduce the salt though.

 3. Okay, so I made this recipe exactly as written and it was incredibly delicious. The flavor was great! It also makes for perfect leftovers. I can't recommend it enough.

 4. OMG, we've tried so many gyro meat recipes, and most are really labor intensive. This was the easiest and the BEST. It was so good, we tripled the recipe the second time we made it! This is a keeper! Make it, you'll love it!

 5. I was so happy with the results of the first attempt that I'm preparing to make my second batch now at the wee early hour of 7:27 am to be used not as gyro meat, but as hot dog meat with gyro flavor. I cut the meat into hotdog length strips and then place on a soft wheat bun with whatever dressing I prefer. The seasoning of the meat is perfect. I didn't belch seasonings for hours afterwards or anything unpleasant like that, and that tells me this guy has zeroed in his spice portions perfectly. For the $3 it costs for 1 LB of ground turkey, I can make up almost 10 gyro flavor turkey hot dogs with no preservatives or mystery meat. I did use this meat inside of a traditional gyro and it was impressive. Few turkey meat recipes online turn out well in the kitchen. I've grown so tired of turkey burgers as of late, so thank you for bringing some economical variety to my kitchen.

Tweaks

 1. I put it inside some whole wheat pita with yogurt, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber and feta cheese.

 2. I added a bit more of each spice, everything else just as noted in recipe.

 3. Loved this tonight for dinner. I followed everything except used wheat bran instead of oats to save carbs. The fam had this in pitas with yogurt dill sauce, feta, tomato, lettuce and onion. I had mine as a salad and it was very tasty. Not over seasoned like I worried it might be. Nice balance of seasoning. Thanks for sharing.

 4. Wow great flavor in these gyros! I used a bit of cinnamon instead of the allspice, otherwise made as directed. I did broil the slices a bit before serving and I thought that was a great idea. Served on pitas with tzatziki and chopped tomatoes for a great easy meal - thanks for sharing the recipe!
