Gyros Spice Mix with a kick

"Use this on whole or cut up pieces of meat. If the chili powder seems to hot for you, leave it out, it will still be a nice spice mix. There is no salt added to the mix. When marinating small pieces of meat I like to add fresh cut up coriander leaves. Marinating time can be 20 minutes and up to a day. Together with the lemon juice you can also use buttermilk or yogurt."

  1. TO DIE FOR!!! I used 1 T. chili powder being that this was the first time I made this. I also halved the cinnamon as I was a little nervous to use so much! I mixed 3 teaspoons with 3/4 lb ground lamb and 1 1/2 lb ground chuck with a generous squirt of fresh lemon juice, a crushed clove of garlic, and a chopped onion. I let the mixture sit all morning and made up patties in the evening. We grilled them and made them into Gyros burgers as Dh forgot to pick up pitas! Even the kids ate every last drop and as picky as they are that's a miracle! This mix will become a staple in our house, I can't wait to try it with other meats! Thanks Annelies!

  2. I am actually not going to make this recipe. I have ate a lot of gyros, some from NY deli which were out of this world, some in Houston that were excellent (nick the greeks), and many at other greek and Mediterranean restaurants. Most very good and a few I will never eat again! As of yet I have never had one that has cinnamon in it? For those of you that are probably more astute about greek food then me, is that really authentic or something you will find in the Mediterranean gyros? I can taste cinnamon in most foods. I find it disgusting when in strong doses in meats. There are some mexi dishes when not overpowering it is good. Same with Jamaican. But mostly it gags me when more then just a little. A teaspoon of cinnamon is overpowering. Also chili powder? Which should always be denoted as to whether it is ground NM chili or the blended McCormack spices. They can be good but I have never noted any gyros that have that addition of either blended chili powder or NM red chili powder mild or hot! Sorry this recipe does not sound like anything more then a taco or enchilada mix with thyme, coriander and parsley added. Just wondering. I see some comments that would lead me to think it has some poor Greek flavors too.

  3. Any of you ever been to Greece!? Believe not. This has NOTHING to do with any kind of gyros

  4. Hope you like taco meat cause that's what it tastes like.

  5. This was good. I added 4 cloves of minced garlic and the seasoning to the hot pan before adding the chicken. I separately sautéd a yellow onion and and orange and yellow bell pepper. The gyros were delicious.

Hello, my name is Bonnie and I am a very beautiful cat as you can see if you look at the picture at the top of this page.... What??.. I am supposed to talk about you??? But it says here: About Me!! Well all right then ...... My mom is Dutch and has moved to England in October 2007, after living 15 years in the Netherlands with my English dad. They don’t have any human children and “created” their own family, which means I have to share them with Hannah, she is a 6 years old tortie cat, Abby the dog, she is a 9 year old Beagle, and a one year old black Miniature Pincher named Poppy, I refuse to tell you my age but I am a georgious lilac British Shorthair cat!! It is obvious she adores pets just by looking at her name she uses on Zaar (many on Zaar call her Pets or Petsie Poo), her name in real life is Annelies and that is a common Dutch name. My mom always liked to cook, but since she joined Zaar it got out of control, and it doesn’t help that she is disorganized. Printed recipes everywhere in the house, the recipe binders have got bigger and just between you and me, her hips too!!! I have lived in Holland all of my life until now, but they lived in several different countries/places:- desert and coastal Oman, up North and West in Holland, Vancouver-Canada, Aberdeen- Scotland and in Norway they lived in Bergen and Oslo. We have all moved together to England, as you can see I’ve already learnt the language! I heard her say to Dad that this is the last time she moved to another country...she's had it with moving from one place to another! ( its her age...she's getting grumpy) Mom is 55 years old but I always hear her say that the date of her birthday does not mean that much to her, the date of her cancer anniversary is more important, because so far she is a survivor. Besides cooking she has other interests too, crafts, gardening and soap making. She likes Zaar and is one of the hosts on the German-Benelux Forum here on RecipeZaar. She would like to thank everybody who tries and comments on the recipes she has posted on Recipezaar, your feedback is very much appreciated.
