Homemade White Bread, Non-Bread Machine

"Delicious, basic bread recipe. Yummy! When I make this recipe, I bake one, and freeze the other two loaves, then use them later. To use later, I simply thaw in greased bread pan & let rise above & continue to follow same directions as posted. Enjoy!"

Questions & Replies

  1. I only get 2 loaves. If I do 3, they are pretty small. Is everyone getting 3?

  1. This really makes a lovely loaf of bread. I've tried a lot of white bread recipes (many of them more complicated) and none have come out so light and fluffy. My only mistake was not doubling the batch! I brushed some melted butter on top of the loaf just before I popped it in the oven, to make it crusty on the outside.

  2. Yes, this turned out nicely. My guests loved it and asked for the recipe. I froze the extra loaves and have since used them and your directions for that were great, thank you.

  3. OMG! DELISH!!! Look no further....I know I'm not. I used butter instead of lard, brown instead of white sugar, & only had quick rise yeast on hand(used 2/3 the amount as substitution for active yeast). Turned out to be the most moist and flavourful bread I have ever had! Thank you!

  4. Very good. I haven't tried defrosting the extra loaves yet, but I am sure that will work out fine. I was a bit dubious before I started kneading it...it looked..to...shiny, or wet or something. But one I started kneading in some extra flour it started behaving like a very nice bread dough. Thanks for sharing.

  5. I love this bread, easy to make at home with the kids.

  2. Great recipe, and so easy! I also used vegetable oil instead of lard and it turned out great. THANK-YOU for sharing this recipe!

  3. I used butter instead of lard. Great results. Water temp to 107 and used it to rinse out melted butter. Red Star Quick Rise Yeast used. Always ensure no clumps of Salt, Sugar or All Purpose Flour are used by sifting prior to use, thus allowing proper measurements and incorporation of ingredients. Tasty Bread! You may sub sea salt.

  4. this is the best white bread recipe i've tried so far. :-) i used canola oil in place of the lard, but other than that, followed the recipe as written.

  5. Followed recipe exactly but it was too sweet for my Scottish tastes the first time I made it. Next time left out the sugar and used olive oil in place of lard and it tastes fab.
