Hungarian Nutty Cones

"An interesting recipe I'm going to try, one day. They're cones filled with nuts and meringues. From You magazine circa 1994. The recipe is accompanied by a lovely photo. I've got no idea how long it takes to make."

directions

  • Preheat the oven to 200°C Spray a few large baking sheets with non-stick spray.
  • Sift the flour, baking powder and salt together. Rub in the butter. Add the egg yolks, sour cream, vanilla essence and just enough milk to form a soft dough which is easy to roll.
  • Blend the ingredients with a spatula until just mixed.
  • Divide the dough into 5 individual pieces. On a floured surface, roll out each piece till 2mm thick. Cut out a circle, 23 cm in diamter from each piece of dough and cut each circle into 8 wedges.
  • Whisk the egg whites till soft peaks are formed. Add the castor sugar by the spoonful, beating well after each addition. Add the nuts and vanilla essence and mix lightly. Spoon about 5ml of the filling onto each pastry wedge and roll up the wedge, starting at the wide end. Arrange the cones on the prepared baking sheets and brush with the whisked egg yolk. Bake for about 15 minutes or till done and golden brown. Roll in icing sugar while still warm.

Not much to tell! I'm a South African living in London, mother of four rangingfrom 25 to 9. I am desperately trying to get my children's stories published - anyone out there interested? Until my ship sails in, I cook, eat everything and anything, and then diet like mad. I love experimenting with new recipes and I absolutely hate spoilt kids who visit and say? "what is THIS?" and push it away without trying. My favourite cookbook is Mrs Beeton's family cookbook. 1994 edition.
