For the dough
- 4 cups flour
- 1⁄2 teaspoon baking powder (heaped)
- 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 1⁄2 teaspoon ajwain
- 1 teaspoon black pepper, crushed

For the filling
- 1⁄2 cup yellow moong dal
- 1 cup water
- 1 teaspoon garlic, crushed
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- 1⁄4 - 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
- oil (for frying)
directions
- Mix ingredients for dough and knead till soft.
- To prepare the filling - boil the daal with all the spices listed till it is soft but not mushy.
- Drain and let it dry.
- Moisten palms with a little oil, take a tbsp of dough which you form into balls and flatten into small circles with your hands.
- Place the daal filling in the middle of the circle, bring sides together and pinch to close.
- Flatten the ball again.
- Repeat with the remaining dough.
- Deep fry.
- Serve.
