“This was featured in the newspaper as a popular 19th century "receipt" that was published in "The American Frugal Housewife"-- going back to the 1880s instead of 1980s here ;) The original recipe is written as "Cut a sufficient number of thin slices of white bread to cover the bottom and line the sides of a baking dish, first rubbing it thickly with butter. Put thin apples into the dish in layers, til the dish is full, streing sugar and bits of butterbetween. In the meantime, soak as many thin slices of bread as will cover the whole, in warm milk; over wihch place a plate and a weight to keep the bread clos upon the apples.   1. Butter or use cooking spray on a 9" pie or 1.5-quart baking dish with a heavy lid.
  2. Dip 4 slices of bread into the milk and line the bottom and sides of the baking dish with them.
  3. Layer apples, sugar, spice, and dots of butter until the dish is filled.
  4. Dip the remaining bread into the milk and arrange on top of the apples, the filling will be piled up high. Cover with lid or an oven-proof plate to press down the top layers.
  5. Bake at 350F for 30 minutes or mor until the apples are soft when tested with a knife. Serve hot or cold.
