“This is my favorite quick bread. The recipe was passed on to our family from a neighbor when I was a child. This is the only recipe that I have ever used and I always get rave reviews. If you don't like dates or nuts they can be omitted but I think that is what makes the bread so good. The dates will cook up and most people don't even know they are in there. Great for the holidays.”

Directions

  1. Cream togeter sugar, shortening, eggs, pumpkin and water. Add spices and all other dry ingredients. This will make a heavy batter that I usually mix with a spoon instead of mixer. Add chopped dates and nuts.
  2. Pour into greased loaf pans.
  3. Makes 2 large loaves and 3 med loaves. Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees.
