Safe to Eat Raw Chocolate Chip Cookie "dough"

"I was searching the web for something like this. I doubled this recipe for my son's bake sale. I labeled if "Safe to Eat." I worried about the ice melting and dough getting too soft. Not to worry, it was gone in 20 minutes."

Questions & Replies

  1. I have heard that if you take out the eggs and heat-treat the flour, raw cookie dough will be safe to eat. True?

Reviews

  1. Agree with commenter below, raw flour is more dangerous than raw eggs. Try a chickpea and g/f or nut flour instead.

  2. Maybe this should be titled UNsafe to eat- it still contains raw flour, which is one of the two reasons raw cookie dough is unsafe (the other being eggs due to possible salmonella).

  3. This was a hit! It was ideal -- don't see where the need is to cut back on the sugars at all. Those trying to make a negative about eating raw flour, forget about it, as I have never heard of anyone getting sick off of eating raw flour. You want the almost perfect little devil to appeal to your "naughty" craving, this is it. We even added chopped pecans and rolled them into powdered sugar. Another time after making these, my husband and son melted some additional chocolate and dipped the dough balls before eating. It sounds like we do this all the time, but no. Just a delicious treat that often comes up as a reward for a job very well done!

  4. https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2011/12/09/143450624/the-surprising-ingredient-in-raw-cookie-dough-that-could-make-you-sick Raw flour can make you sick. You need a recipe without flour to be safe.

  5. It was kind of sweet and very thin, so I added a little less sugar and a little more flour, plus a pinch of baking soda for that savory undertone. I love to freeze it in spoonfuls. Delicious!

Tweaks

  1. I replaced the butter with applesauce to eliminate some of the fat. I also decreased the amount of sugar slightly and used oatmeal instead of chocolate chips. I'm very into cutting calories and fat where I can. I thought it tasted nice. Good recipe. It was a little too sweet though.
