Brewed Coffee Sausage Gravy

"I received this recipe from an elderly Southern Lady that worked for me 20 years ago, long before Sausage Gravy became popular around here. I have received many compliments when I serve this. I would definitely use a sage sausage. We like Bob Evans the best."

  1. OMG I've been making Sausage Gravy for years and wanted a new version. This was the best, the bomb soo delishious! Thank you for sharing I have this saved and will do over and over again. I did not use sage sausage and used heavy cream instead of milk. I have a family recipe for buttermilk biscuits and prepared for my Sunday breakfast! Thank you!

  2. Awesome!! The coffee does transform this gravy from good gravy to great gravy. Next time I will add an extra tablespoon of flour to have thicker gravy. I get to have this again tomorrow morning as leftovers. Thanks for posting Roger/OH

  3. Please don't let the thought of adding coffee turn you away from this fabulous recipe. We tried another sausage gravy recipe on here and it just fell flat; good but just missing something. I had remembered seeing this one and thinking how bizarre adding coffee sounded, but mixed it in with a small separated portion of our gravy out of desperation to save breakfast. WOW That was definitely it. It gives the gravy such depth of flavor that all the other recipes I've tried seemed to lack. If you are skeptical do as I did mixing a 'test' using your favorite sausage gravy recipe and you will not be disappointed. Coffee is the secret ingredient to FANTASTIC sausage gravy!!!!!! Thank you so much for sharing.

  4. Made this for my 'all things southern' Canadian Thanksgiving. AMAZING. Wasn't a drop of it left at the end of dinner. Even my 'I don't eat gravy' friend was raving. Next year will be a triple batch at the very least. Made along side Southern Buttermilk Biscuits #26110.

  5. My great grandmother used to make this and called it red eye gravy due to the coffee. People thought I was crazy when I told them I used coffee. I use all low fat milk instead of the water, and sometimes add some beef base if the flavor is lacking.

For extra cash, we have a small herd of Texas Longhorns here in Ohio. We raise them for both show and beef. I go into withdrawal when we run out of our lean meat and have to buy the store bought meat. I have been involved in buckskinning (camping where tents, dress and everything conforms to pre 1840)for 15 years. We bought a motorhome last year so most of my camping has been modern style lately. My wife likes the conviences. I love nothing more than to sit around the camp fire all day and cook. If you run into me at a camp grounds, both modern and oldtime, bring your plate and hunger. There is always something on the fire. My rating system updated 8/06: When I first came to the Zaar, every recipe was great. I have become more critical 5 Stars - Fantastic recipe. I would pay for this dish in a restaurant and tell all my friends to try it. 4 Stars - Truely a great recipe that I would proudly serve to guests as is. May tweak a slightly. 3 Stars - So so. Didn't move us either way. Maybe a good basic recipe to build on or it may be be an item that doesn't normally grace our table. That will be stated. I may make again with changes. 2 Stars - Sorry nobody liked it. 1 Star - Don't know what went wrong, but something did. Nobody ate it. No clue what to do. <img < img src= "http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/DUCHESS13/FFF/completedbanner.gif"><img src="http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e347/Saturn6666/FFFFlag.jpg"> <img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/susied214/projects/chef3.jpg" alt="Image hosted by Photobucket.com"> <img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/susied214/beartag_1_1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"> <img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/susied214/adopted_1_1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"> <img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/susied214/permanent%20collection/untitled.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"> <img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/susied214/permanent%20collection/200_artistrichardneuman-art-prints_.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"> <img src="http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/DUCHESS13/FFF/Switzerland-FFF4.gif"> <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a209/tlonghorn/banners/BBQ2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a> <img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/susied214/permanent%20collection/BtoBHosts.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"> <img src="http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b399/susied214/CV.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"> <img src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd235/MidwestMaven/SpoiledPetbanner.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"><img src="http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w115/bugh8er/food%20and%20swaps/400035_d7f1b969-m3_1217872626.png" border="0" alt="Photobucket">
