  • Remove heads from cloves, wash, core, and slice cabbage.
  • Cut up onion Pare and slice apples.
  • Combine cloves, cabbage, onion, apples, bacon fat, salt, sugar, vinegar, water, bay leaves, allspice, and peppercorns in a large sauce pan.
  • Cover.
  • Simmer for 1 hour and 30 min
  • Make a paste of cornstarch and equal amounts of water.
  • Stir into cabbage mixture.
  • Cook until thickened.
