  1. This recipe is very much like the dish served every week at my sorority house in the late 50's. It was everyone's favorite back then and I still make it now. In my nostalgic version, I add a dash of garlic powder and 2 tsp. soy sauce to the mixture, omit green peppers, and spread some grated sharp cheddar cheese over the top before adding the Chow Mein noodles and a dash of garlic salt. The classic sometimes included cashew nuts, but it was wonderful with or without them. Thanks for sharing this really old-time favorite, a real treat back before there was a Chinese spot on every corner.

  2. I absolutely love this recipe. It's one that my mother got from her sister sometime in the '70s -- with two major differences. In our version, the onions are scallions, and the peanuts are cashews. I usually stick to fresh and natural, but this is real comfort food to me, regardless of all the canned ingredients. We love it so much that we've been known to double the recipe, and put the second casserole in the freezer, adding the nuts and chow mein noodles after we've thawed it and before we've cooked it.

  3. We loved this and thought it was very different. I added mushrooms, peas and soy sauce (used cream of celery soup). Though I think the end product was just screaming for water chestnuts. Gave this 4 stars bc I think it needs the additional veggies, but my DH had no problem gobbling it up throughout the evening!

  4. Very good comfort food casserole! I doubled recipe and added one cup of frozen peas and a half cup sliced fresh button mushrooms. Delcious! Thanks for posting this recipe!

  5. OMG, I had forgotten about this casserole! I used to make it all the time as a teen! I cut the celery on the bias though and did a layer of chow mein noodles, the tuna mix (no peanuts though) and another layer of chow mein noodles. Whenever I visited my Granparents Grandpa would ask me to make this for me! Thanks for the memories! This is a great little casserole!

  1. Made this for our tea tonight and was very pleased with the results. Took me back to my childhood. I added a TBS of Soy Sauce and used cashews instead of peanuts as that was what I had. Thanks for posting!
