Turkey Chorizo

"I was looking to make a lighter version of chorizo with a strong garlic flavor. The original recipe calls for ground pork and not having in I used turkey and made a few additional changes and the result was very good. The Ancho chile will not add alot of heat. It adds a nice rich flavor. The heat can be adjusted to your liking by increasing the red pepper flakes."

  1. That is a great recipe, easy to follow and the result is exactly the traditional chorizo taste, but much heatier, less fat and no preservatives, Thank you for sharing it.

  2. Thank you for this. My husband has a heart condition and has been missing chorizo. (or occasionally getting some, lol) He is thrilled with this recipe. I don't add the salt due to his heart. I used regular chili powder with salt because that was all that I had, but I am going to buy some chili powder that doesn't have salt. Again, thanks so much! there are so many things that my husband can't eat anymore but now there is one less thing. :)

  3. I did make a couple of changes to this recipe. I always add 1 tbsp oil to a lb of turkey meat no matter what the recipe. I also sauteed an onion and about 1/3 of a green pepper. I also added 2 tbsp of beef broth and 1 tsp of powdered jalapeno to this recipe. Its was great! I took it to work and one of my friends who is from Belize said it was the best chorizo she had ever had.

  4. I followed the exact recipe. It's okay. I didn't get the sickly sweet black licorice taste from Mexican chorizo. It has that weird white washed south west seasoning taste. It basically tastes like taco seasoning excessively dumped on meat. In my opinion you should try a different recipe if you want that true breakfast burrito taste. I do not suggest this recipe.

  5. I made the mistake of using ground turkey breast instead of ground turkey. I won't do that again! You definitely need a little bit of fat in the meat. That being said, the flavor of this chorizo was excellent! I used it to make breakfast burritos with scrambled eggs, pico de gallo, jalapeno slices, avocado chunks and pepper jack cheese. Yummy! Thanks for sharing, Paula!

I came to this site in March of 2004. It was then called Recipezaar. This site was the first on-line site that I ever joined. I first popped in 2003 while searching for a Peach Cobbler Recipe. In March of 2004, DH was having shoulder surgery and I was looking for a Split Pea Soup. Once again I found myself on Zaar as it came to be called. Over the years I hung out and learned from some of the best home cooks in the country, I posted over 700 recipes on the site, reviewed over 3500 recipes and posted over 3000 food photos. Over the next 10 years the site made many changes and in 2010 it was sold to to Food Network and became Food.com. Until last year we played games, talked and shared with one another. As a result of the community and the relationships I built I got to meet some wonderful people from all over the country. I also have a great number of friends that I have never meet face to face. Some of us still hang out at various places across the net. Zaar was more than a cooking community. It was an internet community of friendship. Life is an adventure ever changing.
