"Grandma must have really loved applesauce cake because she had two recipes for it in her box. This one is from Carol. The other recipe was similar and had a suggestion at the end to substitute 3 or 4 tablespoons of cocoa for an equivalent quantity of flour to make Cocoa Apple Sauce Cake. It advised that Apple Sauce Cake keeps well."

- 2 3⁄4 cups flour
- 2 cups sugar
- 1⁄4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 1⁄2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 1⁄2 teaspoons salt
- 3⁄4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1⁄2 teaspoon clove
- 1⁄2 teaspoon allspice
- 1⁄2 cup shortening, soft
- 1⁄2 cup water
- 1 1⁄2 cups unsweetened applesauce
- 2 eggs
- 1⁄2 cup chopped walnuts
- 1 cup raisins
directions
- Combine dry ingredients.
- Cream together remaining ingredients.
- Mix.
- Bake at 350 F 45-50 minutes.
