ingredients
- 2⁄3 cup shortening
- 1 1⁄2 cups sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup flour
- 1⁄2 cup cocoa
- 1⁄2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
directions
- Blend shortening, sugar, eggs, together. Combine flour, cocoa, B.P., salt, vanilla. Spread in greased 8 inch square baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes.

These brownies were VERY easy to make and tasted great. They had a slightly bitter overtone from the cocoa powder, so I added a little more sugar. I made a second batch and substituted applesauce for part of the shortening and it worked pretty well. We are always trying to find alternate ways to cut down fat in goodies since we don't buy them...everything here comes from my kitchen. They also took a bit more time to bake then the 25-35 min quoted in the recipe...more like 45 min for either recipe. Try these, but I would recommend adding the extra sugar.
