Chocolate Covered Bacon

"I haven't tried this, but I definitely will. Sounds crazy enough to work! Bacon = yum. Chocolate = yum. It has to work...right?"

  • 1 lb of uncooked bacon

directions

  • Heat large skillet on high; add bacon strips.
  • Turn bacon strips over as needed with tongs.
  • Cook back until it’s reduced to about ¼ of its original size and appears to be crispy. (Personally I believe that the bacon should be crispy; however if you prefer your chocolate covered bacon chewy opposed to crunchy then reduce cooking time by removing your bacon earlier).
  • Drain bacon on papertowels to remove grease.
  • While the bacon is cooling fill the double boiler or medium sauce pan with water and bring to a medium heat.
  • Place double boiler top pan in double boiler bottom pan or put the small sauce pan in the medium sauce pan.
  • Slowly add chocolate morsels into top pan and stir while morsels melt. Do this until all morels have been added. (Be sure to keep stirring to prevent the chocolate from burning.).
  • Using your fingers or tongs carefully dip the bacon strips into the chocolate, if necessary use a spoon to spoon the melted chocolate over the bacon evenly coating it.
  • Once coated lay strips on cooling rack (with something underneath to catch the drips) or waxed paper lined cookie sheet. Cool in refrigerator for 15 minutes to set chocolate.

Questions & Replies

  1. Hi love this idea for chocolate-covered bacon. My question is can I still use this recipe but use cast iron pans instead of sauce pans? and sub dark chocolate pieced for semi-sweet morsels?

  1. Definitely interesting! Great in the fact that it only needs 2 ingredients and is super easy to prepare. I used semi-sweet chocolate which I found to be great, it didn't overpower the bacon, you got both flavours clearly - that is why I gave it 4 stars. It is a good recipe, I just personally have trouble with the whole sweet/savory so I probably wouldn't eat it again.

  2. I saw this on the Food Channel. It was a program of all bacon. It sounded so good I could not wait to try it. I tried Oscar Myer thick center cut bacon and made it very crispy. I first tried it with bitter sweet chocolate, but the chocolate masked the bacon flavor. I next tried the milk chocolate and found it was perfect. My husband loved it too. I was surprised I liked the milk chocolate better because I much prefer dark chocolate. Enjoy

  3. I like bacon and I like chocolate. Same with the rest of the family. We just didn't think it was all that, like others think it is. I was told that the semisweet chips should have been replaced with milk chocolate. I won't make this again.

  4. Well, this was truly a unique recipe to try, but also loads of fun. I used semi-sweet chocolate and white chocolate for a contrasting effect on alternating pieces of bacon. Three of us tried it,and it received in stars: 3.0, 3.5, and 5.0. This really is pretty good, and with just 2 ingredients, really worth trying yourself. It is best served cold so you can even make it the night before. We placed them in the fridge to firm up the chocolate, and found it was better than the warmed 'sample' piece). Thanks Shelby Jo, for giving us a really good (and daring) recipe to try. We will make this again when we have overnight company, they're great conversation pieces as well. :)

  5. Will admit right up front that I made this recipe fully expecting it to taste awful, but was I ever in for a surprise! IT'S VERY, VERY NICE TASTING, & well-worth making again! Thanks for a pleasant taste experience & for a recipe that I'll be keeping on hand! It will be great for my next finger food buffet! [Tagged, made & reviewed for Newest Zaar Tag]
