directions

  • Heat the oven to 325 degrees F.
  • Split the Kaiser rolls making the bottom larger than the top. Scoop some of the white soft insides out of the bottoms to make room for your filling. Reserve the tops.
  • Mix salt and pepper, to taste, and grated cheese into ricotta. Spread ricotta mixture on one side of the roll.
  • Cover the ricotta with mozzarella, tomato and basil.
  • NOTE: Feel free to add some veggies here. You could leave the meat out if you like and just use veggies! Think of the toppings or calzone fillings you would normally eat and use those. Mushrooms work great here as well as spinach, green peppers, onions, etc. Just remember that all the ingredients have to get hot so do not pile so much on that the bread gets done before the stuffing. ).
  • Bake 8- 10 minutes, to heat through and melt the cheese then add the top of the bread an cook for 2-4 minutes more.
  • Cut and serve with optional garnishes of crushed red pepper flakes and parmesan cheese.

  1. Well, this did not work out so well. In 15 min the cheese still was not melted so I left it in 10 min longer. The cheese still not melted but the bun was getting very toasted and dry. In the end it tasted like bread and cheese and was very crumbly and messy to eat. My husband will eat anything and never complains and was very unhappy with this. This might be better with a smaller bun because the cheese might have melted faster. My son threw is out in disgust and remade it by cutting the bun in half putting ingredients in the oven on high. Everyone agreed that worked out much better.

  2. Fantastic Mama!!!!! The only change I did was to add some marinara sauce to the ricotta cheese. I also served them with more sauce for dipping. I love the crunchiness of the rolls (I used french bread rolls) and the cheesiness of the filling!!!! YUMMO!!!!
