Jolean's Baked Spam Loaf
"This was a recipe of my Mom's that was a favorite to all us kids! I recently found her hand-written recipe and just had to post this (especially for Chef Bill Hilbrich who has a cookbook devoted to Spam...) When I look back on those years in the 70's when my siblings and I looked forward to this dish so much, I now realize that my Mom was just trying to "stretch her grocery budget," but how happy she must have been that we really LOVED this recipe! Funny, huh?"

ingredients
- 2 (12 ounce) cans Spam
- 10 whole cloves
- 1⁄3 cup brown sugar
- 1⁄2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon melted unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon water
directions
- Lay both Spam loaves side by side in glass 8 x 4 inch loaf pan.
- Insert 5 cloves into each Spam loaf, spaced evenly (in star shape).
- Mix remaining ingredients well, and spread this glaze on top of both Spam loaves (letting it drip down the sides).
- Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 20-25 minutes (checking so it does not burn.).
- Let cool for 5 minutes, slice and remove cloves before serving.

anyone remember spam studded with cloves surrounded by lima beans mixed with stewed tomatoes and canned yams baked in the oven? Been looking for an actual recipe that my mom said was either in the paper, magazine or on the spam label. I'm a 1950's kid so this must have been a WWII recipe

Oh, Yes ... A blast from the past when canned meat was seen as a convience rather than something to hide in the cupboard. My mother made this, although I do not recall the star shape, back in the 1950's, and I loved it. Thank You for preserving a childhood memory. Bill -

I liked this!! But then again, I am a Spam junkie. It was easy and tasty. I loved the glaze. My children at it too, which is always a big plus. Thanks for another good use for Spam. -
A BLAST from the past. I have to leave the fifth star off because back in the 1940's "Uncle Sam" replaced our Filet Mignon(Chop meat) with this stuff and I swear every cook in the service was trying to come up with the most recipes for this "NEW" wonderful epicurian delight. I am really surprised that I still like it. Thanks ever so much F/C

My name is Stacy, and I'm a single Mom who works full-time with 4 kids ranging from ages 9 to 21, a brand new granddaughter named Faith, and a cat named Pubert (we call him Pube) who is also my kid... I love music, especially 70's music, cats, incense & lavalights, candles, and I love to play guitar. I've been called an old "hippie chick," and I don't mind that label in the least. I also love to try other people's recipes and find ones that remind me of my Mother, and those precious memories that I had growing up in a household with such a wonderfully comforting cook...I work full-time in a real estate office as an office administrator.
I came to this site looking for recipes that were tried and true. I stayed at this site because I found people who were kind, loving, caring and shared the same interest that I do --- food and cooking. I've saved a lifetime of recipes and learned so much about cooking and ingredients that I actually feel proud of my cooking. I bet my Mom looks down on me with pride every time I cook a new recipe from RecipeZaar, and I bet my Dad cracks up every time he sees me photographing what I've cooked! My daughters have actually gotten into the act, too, and are quite versed in searching for recipes and answers here on Zaar. Makes me proud to be their Mom.
RecipeZaar isn't just a "website." It's a lifestyle. And some of the friends I've made here are LIFELONG friends to me --- and in my estimation, those types of people are a rare thing to find in this world. :)
